Meanwhile, Dutch startup Lightyear One took it further, designing a vehicle covered in solar panels that could gain up to 44 miles (70 km) of range per day solely from sunlight. These advancements showcase the potential of solar charging, but can they truly replace traditional charging methods?

The effectiveness of solar charging depends on panel efficiency, geographic location, and weather conditions. Current solar panels have an efficiency rate of about 20%, meaning they can generate limited power per square foot. On a clear sunny day, a standard solar roof could provide an extra 20-30 miles of range per day. However, cloudy weather, nighttime, and shaded areas reduce efficiency drastically, making solar charging a supplemental solution rather than a primary one.

Installing a solar roof adds around $2,000 to $4,000 to a vehicle’s cost, depending on panel efficiency and integration.
